【摘要】:ThispracticediscussesapplicableASTMtestmethodsusedinthedeterminationoftheVOCcontentofpaintsandrelatedcoatingsandprovidesequationsforcalculatingtheVOCcontentexpressedasthemassofVOC:(1)perunitvolumeofcoatinglesswaterandexemptvolatilecompounds,and(2)perunitvolumeofcoatingsolidsand(3)perunitmassofcoatingsolids.VolatileorganiccompoundcontentisusedtocomparetheamountofVOCreleasedfromdifferentcoatingsusedforthesameapplication,thatis,tocoatthesameareatothesamedryfilmthickness(assumingthesameapplicationefficiency).VOCcontentdataarerequiredbyvariousregulatoryagencies.OnlytheexpressionofVOCcontentasafunctionofthevolumeofcoatingsolidsgivesalinearmeasureofthedifferenceinVOCreleasedfromdifferentcoatingsusedforthesameapplication.Note48212;Thusassumingthesametransferefficiency,acoatingwithVOCcontentof3lbofVOC/galofsolidswouldreleasex00BD;theVOCthatwouldacoatingwith6lbofVOC/galofsolids.WhenVOCcontentisexpressedasafunctionofthevolumeofcoatinglesswaterandexemptsolvents,thevaluesobtaineddonotaccountfordifferencesinthevolumesolidscontentofthecoatingsbeingcompared:thisexpression,therefore,doesnotprovidealinearmeasureofthedifferenceinVOCemittedfromdifferentcoatingsusedforthesameapplication.Note58212;Thus,acoatingwithVOCcontentof3lbofVOC/gallesswaterandexemptvolatilecompoundswouldreleaseabout85%lessVOCthanacoatingwith6lbofVOC/gallesswaterandexemptvolatilecompounds.1.1Thispracticemeasuresthevolatileorganiccompound(VOC)contentofsolventborneandwaterbornepaintsandrelatedcoatingsasdeterminedfromthequantityofmaterialreleasedfromasampleunderspecifiedbakeconditionsandsubtractingexemptvolatilecompoundsandwaterifpresent.Note18212;Theregulatorydefinition,underthecontroloftheU.S.EPA,canchange.Toensurecurrency,contactthelocalairpollutioncontrolagency.1.2ThispracticeprovidesaguidetotheselectionofappropriateASTMtestmethodsforthedeterminationofVOCcontent.1.3CertainorganiccompoundsthatmaybereleasedunderthespecifiedbakeconditionsarenotcountedtowardcoatingVOCcontentbecausetheydonotparticipateappreciablyinatmosphericphotochemicalreactions.Suchnegligiblyphotochemicallyreactivecompoundsarereferredto,asexemptvolatilecompoundsinthispractice.Note28212;InformationontheUSEPAdefinitionofVOCandalistofthecurrentUSEPAapprovedexemptvolatilecompoundswhichhavebeenusedincoatings,areprovidedin.1.4VOCcontentiscalculatedasafunctionof(1)thevolumeofcoatinglesswaterandexemptvolatilecompounds,and(2)thevolumeofcoatingsolids,and(3)theweightofcoatingsolids.1.5ThevaluesstatedineitherSIunitsorinch-poundunitsaretoberegardedseparatelyasstandard.Thevaluesstatedineachsystemmaynotbeexactequivalents;therefore,eachsystemshallbeusedindependentlyoftheother.Combiningvaluesfromthetwosystemsmayresultinnon-conformancewiththestandard.1.6Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
